March 1st onward the Holiday Inn Frederick at FSK Mall will be the Clarion Inn Frederick Event Center. The rebranding from Holiday Inn to Clarion Inn is apparently the marketing part of a program to go upmarket, the more physical part of which involves rebuild and expansion of the hotel, including the conference center.
The business is owned by Cohenterprises, the family of Randy Cohen, the well-known Frederick County businessman.
Susan Lent-Cohen, company president is quoted in a press release: “The Clarion brand has strong name recognition in the leisure market but also offers convenient amenities and great value for business and group travelers, particularly for both large and small conferences.”
The Clarion brand franchisor in the area is Choice Hotels headquartered in Rockville MD. Clarion hotels are classed as three to four-star in the five star rating system.
Cohenterprises’ Susan Lent-Cohen says Choice Hotels is ideally suited to help bring guests to the Frederick area for events, calling it a market leader in events hotels.
The new Frederick Event Center as it is being called has a 156 hotel rooms and 13,000sf of event space, including a 7,800sf banquet hall that can seat up to 500 guests. The complex comprises a restaurant-bar Casey’s Lounge, a 24-hour business center, an indoor pool, a fitness center, and miniature golf. There is free internet service throughout.
In rebuilding they plan to make the Event Center ‘green’ using ‘alternative’ energy.
The hotel is located conveniently to the interstates and to a bunch of stores at and around the Mall but 2.2 miles from the center of the downtown Frederick — beyond normal walking distance. They have a shuttle service to get visitors to and from downtown.
